Shenyang 沈阳 Pinyin: Shěnyáng

History

Shenyang used to be a former capital for the whole of China. Today, Shenyang is the capital of Liaoning Province is one of China's famous industrial cities. It covers an area of 13,007 square kilometers and has a population of 6.5 million. It’s also home to the biggest civil airport in Northeast China, providing regular air service to over 40 cities at home and abroad.

One of Shenyang’s chief industries is one of heavy machinery-building. Metallurgy, textiles electronics and foodstuffs are lesser but large parts of Shenyang’s economy and industry. As for agriculture, in its less polluted farmlands grow rice, corn, wheat, soybean, cotton, peanuts and tobacco.

The Liao River plains in the west is its major topography, while the northeast and southeast are predominately hilly. It has a temperate continental climate with an annual average temperature of 7.8 degree Celsius and rainfall of 734 millimeters. Natural resources include iron, coal, oil and natural gas, as well as limestone marble and pearlite.

Shenyang’s history and culture is also one to be heard. In 1625, the first emperor of the Qing dynasty moved his capital to Shenyang, and remained so until it was moved to Beijing. Its main scenic spots are the Imperial Palace, Baocheng in Crescent Moon Shape, Shisheng Temple and Liaobin Pagoda.
